Okay now this I wasn't expecting...! Here I am in Dhaka going to a theatre performance created by Kamaluddin Nilu and Adapted by Anisur Rahman of the famous Franz Kafka story, The Metamorphosis.
In this story, Gregor Samsa is a salesman who lives with his parents and younger sister and financially supports them. He wakes up one morning to discover that during the night he has been transformed into an insect. After a while, he dies from an injury caused by his father.
This tale expresses the existential imprisonment of a character by social and economic demands.
So we arrive to an Academy that seems abandonned, an Academy that could've been anything but an artistic building...As if the years had taken away its life because it didn't even have the right to survive.
Once inside the building, we bought our first row tickets for Tk 100.00 (less than 1 $)
and it was damn worth the one hour drive...oh yes I swear!
The performance of the two actors Abul Kamal Azad Shetu and Rahmatullah was impressive, I saw talent, eagerness and creativity. The theatre is averagely equiped and with the basic necessities available, the producer came out with some great ideas of interpretation.
I believe that the story sticks as well to the Bengali society...If we are who we are today, feeling oppressed and misunderstood then it might be the result of a constant stuggle to stay alive. Our own chains are the heaviest weight we carry...I therefore hope that people over here will continue to value their real potential and eventually break free.
